Thong Sala Nightlife
What to Do at Night in Thong Sala
Thong Sala is not a place where people specifically head to for nightlife yet if you’re staying there you can still have a good evening out. With a couple of British pubs with pool tables, several bars downtown and even a girlie bar strip, the area has enough to keep punters busy and active once the sun goes down.
Of course the island’s epicentre of nightlife is Haad Rin and Thong Sala in no way compares to that town’s warren of back alleys and streets full of bars and clubs but, in its own quiet way, Thong Sala’s nightlife has its allures.
Girlie Bars
As you drive south from Thong Sala on the main road you’ll notice about 10 red-lit bars roughly adjacent to each other with sexily-clad girls waving at passersby. This is Koh Phangan’s modest equivalent of Patong or Patpong. These bars haven’t (yet) coordinated their music selections so you’ll hear everything from Earth Wind & Fire to silly love songs as you coast past. Very friendly girls and wannabe girls, the area has not (yet) the heady, steamy atmosphere that you’ll find in Bangkok or Phuket. A word of caution, however: always pay individually for each drink as word has it that bar bills in these establishments can be ‘imaginative’.
Opening Hours: 18:00 – lateLocation: South of Thong Sala, Baan Tai Road
The Harp Bar
Overlooking the pier at Thong Sala, The Harp Bar is a cheerful place to head to for draft beer and pub grub. A large professional pool table dominates half of the Harp Bar and, and what with its barrel tables and chunky furniture, sports on the TVs, free jukebox and Irish atmosphere, Harp Bar is worth a visit.
Opening Hours: Mid-morning – lateLocation: Opposite Thong Sala Pier, beachfront
The Masons Arms
A Tudor-style pub set in an expansive beer garden, The Masons Arms is big, air conditioned and atmospheric. With several beers on tap including Guinness, Kilkenny, Kronenbourg and Singha, all-day breakfasts and hearty pub grub along with a free jukebox and free Wifi, The Masons Arms is one of the best watering holes in the area.
Opening Hours: 10:00 – midnightLocation: On the road heading north out of town
