What to Do at Night in Chaloklum and Mae Haad

Haad Rin Beach, not Chaloklum is the place to go on the island if you’re looking for nightlife per se, but if you can settle for a quiet evening out chatting in peaceful surroundings there are a few places to try out in the Haad Mae Haad/Chaloklum area.

Of course for some, an evening under a starlit sky with the waves lapping at your feet is the very raison d’être behind a holiday on a Thai tropical island but others will feel that, without thumping bass rhythms, flashing strobes and a spinning head things are maybe too pedestrian.

Café del Mar/Café the Beach

Both of these neighbouring bars offer chilled-back vibes, sea views, cool breezes and quite good menu selections. Every so often a punter will throw a birthday party at Café del Mar and things will get a little crazy in this open-air club and in high season it certainly is worth checking out.

Location: Beachside, west of the pier

Omega

Also known as Omega Garden, this bar/restaurant sits in leafy surroundings on the main street near the pier in Chaloklum Village. Known for its jam sessions, ‘workshops’ and even concert evenings, this bar is the hub for live music in the area. Style-wise Omega doesn’t exactly try to distinguish itself from the competition in that it’s got the usual Thai-style cushions, wooden floors and fixtures, laid-back attitude and lilting reggae sound and feel to it. Sprawl out, relax and get into the vibe.

Sheesha

Part of the Mandalai Hotel and standing out from the usual uninspired shop-house formula along Chaloklum Main Street, Sheesha comes in a white theme with clean lines, clever lighting and a terrace/deck for sea views. On paper it works quite well but in reality it’s got one big problem: From 18:00 onwards the music is cranked up to silly levels driving away all but the most hardened raver. Still, it’s attractive looking.

The Lost Dog

American run with a free pool table and cool ambience, The Lost Dog gets quite busy in high season and is the place to go for local gossip. A converted shop-house, this bar is not much to look at but worth a visit all the same.

Wake Up! Bar

With free WiFi, cheap beer and occasional live music, Wake Up! is a pretty good venue to head to if you feel like socialising. If you don’t, then browse through the interesting library there. Wake Up! organises wakeboarding in nearby Chaloklum Village so if you’re a sporty type you’ll be in like-minded company at this bar.
