Chaloklum and Mae Haad Restaurants
Where and What to Eat in Chaloklum and Mae Haad
Beach restaurants are the order of the day on this part of the island. Haad Mae Haad has several dine-in-the-sand establishments while neighbouring Chaloklum has a street of sea-facing eateries. Seafood restaurants (naturally) dominate the scene with a smattering of Italian, Dutch and English menus set in resorts, shop-houses and stand-alone arrangements.
Busy during high season yet never crowded, it’s all yours in the low season with acres of empty space to wallow in. Resort dining is possible but do not expect gourmet standards and in fact it’s a wiser option to order Thai food as on Koh Phangan, western dishes can turn out to be rather a hash.
Chaloklum Restaurants
L’Oasi
Probably one of the best Italian restaurants on the island, L’Oasi is roadside, just outside Chaloklum Village. Italian-managed, L’Oasi has two good things going for it: a children’s playground and draft Beer Chang. Of course there’s a whole lot more – excellent spaghetti bolognaise, a range of Thai dishes (the chef is Thai) and the usual burgers with a good range of salads and desserts, with genuine and recommendable espresso.
Opening Hours: 11:00 – 21:30Location: Main Road, entrance to Chaloklum Village
Tel: 086 470 4253
Lost Dog Café
It may be a simple-looking affair but the Lost Dog Café is actually one of Chaloklum Village’s hotspots. A (barely) converted shop-house, it’s a pub with food or a restaurant with a bar – take your pick.
Opening Hours: 14:00 – 02:00Location: Main Street, Chaloklum
Cuisine: Western and Thai
Aunjai Seafood
With its concrete floors and basic look you’d be forgiven for thinking that there’s not a lot going on at Aunjai but the restaurant has some of the warmest service around and a spanking-fresh and large variety of seafood.
Opening Hours: 11:00 – 22:00Location: Main Street, Chaloklum – west end
Cuisine: Thai, Seafood
Two Brothers
Seafood served with a view out over the sweep of the bay. Dine on bamboo chairs with sand between your toes in this cleverly-lit restaurant. If the weather turns nasty you can always move inside.
Location: Main Street, Chaloklum – west endCuisine: Seafood, Thai
Café The Beach
Dine in your own ‘sala’ (small bamboo-and-thatch hut) at Café The Beach. There’s also a cosy bar and the whole restaurant has views over the eastern end of the beach. Nicely lit place with a friendly atmosphere.
Location: Chaloklum Beach, eastern endCuisine: Thai, Western
Haithong Seafood
Quaint and old fashioned, Haithong Seafood Restaurant has the choice of indoors or al fresco dining, roadside or beachside. Instead of the usual concrete, Haithong has heavily polished wooden floors and pretty lighting. Incredibly enough, Haithong opens at 05:30 in the morning!
Opening Hours: 05:30 – 22:00Location: Main Street, Chaloklum
Cuisine: Seafood, Thai
Haad Mae Haad Restaurants
Sun Shine Restaurant
Sun Shine is a friendly, family-run business serving homemade pizzas and pastas in an open-side, roomy, fan-cooled restaurant just outside Haad Mae Haad Beach. Of course it also serves Thai food and at cheap prices, too.
Opening Hours: 10:00 – 23:00Location: 200 metres from Haad Mae Haad Beach
Tel: +66 (0)77 374 119
Cuisine: Italian (home made pasta & pizza) and Thai
Wang Sai Restaurant
Teakwood fittings, shade and seabreezes; Wang Sai may lack atmosphere but it’s got the building blocks for a nice meal by the sea. Predominantly Thai food with European breakfasts, don’t expect fine dining from a bungalow resort.
Opening Hours: 07:00 – 22:00Location: Central Haad Mae Haad Beach by the car park
Cuisine: Thai, Seafood and Western
Island View Cabana
This resort restaurant features a large terrace, lacquered teakwood interiors, a humorously-spelt menu with a good range of ‘buguettes’, a long cocktail list and lavish breakfasts. Of course, the specialty here is seafood, and it doesn’t hurt that the surroundings are so attractive. Wang Sai has Burmese waiters, so the level of spoken English is commendable.
Opening Hours: 07:00 – 22:00Location: Northern end of Haad Mae Haad Beach
