Koh Phangan Beaches and Towns

The first image that springs to mind when Koh Phangan is mentioned is the thump of amplified bass lines and the flashing lights and dancing bodies of the Full Moon Party. But Koh Phangan by day is a veritable sanctuary of the senses and its beaches are simply unrivalled in the Gulf of Thailand for their tranquility and sheer stunning beauty.

The clichéd but nevertheless idyllic picture of the south of Thailand – nodding palms along white-sand beaches under a cobalt-blue sky – most certainly and happily applies to Phangan, but at some beaches more so than others: Ao Thong Nai Pan Noi & Yai, along with Haad Salad are not only out of the way but are well worth going out of your way for while Haan Rin Nok and Haad Rin Nai are both attractive but built up with the Gulf’s biggest concentration of clubs and bars, proving that some can have their cake and eat it too. Exploring the island’s beaches is a supremely rewarding pastime so try to put plenty of time aside for this and take a camera along.

Chaloklum Bay

Chaloklum and Haad Mae Haad

A peaceful and exceptionally beautiful part of the island, Chaloklum and Haad Mae Haad beaches are situated on the northwestern coast of Koh Phangan. Chaloklum Beach itself is two-and-a-half kilometres long with the main village and pier in the middle. Read More...

Haad Rin (Sunset & Sunrise)

Haad Rin (Sunset & Sunrise)

Haad Rin is a love-it-or-hate-it sort of town. For dedicated partygoers it’s probably the best place going but for those seeking the ‘real’ Thailand it can be a bit of a letdown. With two beaches and a warren of alleys in between, Haad Rin can get somewhat claustrophobic in the heat of the day but at night the place truly lights up. Read More...

Haad Yao & Haad Salad

Haad Yao & Haad Salad

The first thing that strikes newcomers who know that ‘Haad Yao’ means ‘Long Beach’ is that in fact it isn’t really that long! This white-sand strand is one of Koh Phangan’s most beautiful beaches, with lots of shallow water and swaying palms. Haad Salad is Haad Yao’s younger sister. It is quieter with less swimming possibilities but nevertheless beautiful. Read More...

Ao Thong Nai Pan Noi & Yai

Thong Nai Pan Noi & Yai

These idyllic adjacent coves on the northeast of Koh Phangan are pictures of tropical charm itself. Thong Nai Pan Noi, the northernmost of the beaches, has more of a hippy-like feel to it whereas Yai is not exactly sold-out touristic but lacks the cohesive village atmosphere of Noi. Read More...

Thong Sala

Thong Sala

Thong Sala has long played second fiddle to Koh Phangan Party Central, Haad Rin. Many people regard this port town as a mere disembarkation destination before heading on to another beach. But over the years Thong Sala has developed and is now an excellent shopping destination with an admirable choice of restaurants. Read More...
